Can I Play Spotify in My Spa? The 2026 Answer

No — Spotify is licensed for personal, non-commercial use only. What a spa legally needs for in-room music, and what covers your videos.

Calm spa ambience artwork — meditation music licensing for wellness businesses

You have built a place people come to in order to relax — and the easiest button in the room is a Spotify playlist called "Spa Vibes". Before you press play for customers, here is the question that protects your business: is that actually legal?

Can I play Spotify in my spa?

No. Spotify's own Terms of Use restrict the service to personal, non-commercial use — and playing music to the customers in your rooms is, legally, a public performance. That is true for the free tier, for Premium and for a playlist a customer brings along. Premium removes ads; it does not add a single commercial right.

This is not a theoretical risk. Collection societies actively license and audit business premises, and settlements for unlicensed in-store music are a well-documented cost. A treatment room with a consumer streaming account running is exactly the situation those audits exist for.

What does a spa actually need for in-room music?

Two separate layers, and it helps to keep them apart:

  1. A source that is licensed for business playback. Dedicated background-music services exist precisely because consumer streaming is off-limits — or you use repertoire that is expressly free of collection-society registration.
  2. The venue's public-performance licence. For society-registered music — which is most professionally composed music worldwide — the operator registers the playback with the local collection society (GEMA in Germany, PRS in the UK, ASCAP/BMI in the US) and pays the applicable background-music tariff.

Honesty from a music company: an Artyfile licence does not replace either layer. Our music is in the GEMA repertoire, like the work of every professional composer, and our licence covers recordings and videos — not public playback in your rooms. The full breakdown of what is and isn't covered lives on our meditation and spa music licensing page.

Do I need a different licence for my spa’s videos and guided sessions?

Here is the twist that matters commercially. When spa owners ask about "music for my business", most of what they actually produce is not in-room playback at all — it is content:

  • the promo film and the Instagram reels for the studio,
  • the website background video,
  • guided meditations and breathwork recordings with your voice over the music,
  • online yoga classes, livestreams and course modules.

All of that is synchronisation — pairing music with your recording — and no streaming subscription on earth grants it. It needs a sync licence for the specific recording. That is exactly what a licensing catalogue provides, and it is where the economics turn friendly: an Artyfile Basic licence is €29.90 once per track, covers an unlimited number of your own productions plus client work, worldwide and in perpetuity, and ships with a licence certificate as documented proof. What a sync licence is in detail — and why it beats renting — is covered in what a sync license actually costs.

Which licence covers what? The 60-second table

Online class, livestream, course platformSynchronisationSync licence — no subscription that expires under old lessons

For yoga studios specifically — classes, flows, savasana playlists on video — the same logic applies; the yoga music collection is built for it.

Bottom line

Spotify in the spa is a consumer product in a commercial setting — the terms say no, and the public-performance layer is a matter for you and your local collection society either way. Your videos, sessions and courses are the part a music licence genuinely solves: €29.90 once per track, worldwide, for life, certificate included. Calm that was actually played by real musicians, cleared for the content that grows your business.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play Spotify in my spa, salon or massage practice?+

No. Spotify's Terms of Use license the service for personal, non-commercial use only. Playing it to customers in a business space is a public performance, which needs a business music solution plus the public-performance licence your local collection society (GEMA, PRS, ASCAP/BMI) issues.

Is a Spotify Premium subscription enough for business use?+

No — Premium removes ads, it does not add commercial rights. The personal-use restriction applies to free and paid consumer accounts alike.

What do I actually need for background music in my treatment rooms?+

Two things: a source licensed for business playback (a dedicated background-music service, or expressly society-free repertoire) and, for society-registered music, the venue's public-performance licence from the local collection society. Collection societies actively license and audit business premises, so unlicensed in-store playback is a real cost risk.

Can I use Spotify tracks in my spa's Instagram reels or website videos?+

No — a streaming subscription grants no synchronisation rights at all. Putting a commercial track under your video needs a sync licence for that specific recording. That is what a licensing catalogue like Artyfile provides: €29.90 once per track, worldwide and for life.

What music can I legally use in guided meditations and online classes?+

Music licensed for synchronisation. An Artyfile Basic licence (€29.90 one-time) covers your voice over the music in guided sessions, online classes, courses and marketing videos — across unlimited productions of your own, with a certificate as proof.

Does an Artyfile licence cover music played inside my spa?+

Honestly: no. Our licence covers recordings and videos (sync). Public playback in your rooms is a separate matter between the operator and the local collection society — with any professionally composed music, ours included.
