How suspense music works

Suspense lives in what the music holds back. Tension comes from expectation — the listener senses that something is about to happen and the music delays the answer. The techniques are consistent across film, TV and games:

• Sustained tones and pedal notes. A held low note or a string cluster keeps the ear waiting.
• A pulse without release. A repeating rhythmic figure (ostinato) at 60–90 BPM feels like a heartbeat and pushes the scene forward.
• Minor keys and unresolved harmony. Chords that avoid coming home leave the viewer uneasy.
• Dynamics that creep. A slow crescendo toward the reveal — then a hit, or sudden silence.
• Dark, sparse colours. Low strings, piano in the low register, synth pads and organ.

Choose the right level of tension

• Low simmer for true crime narration, investigative documentaries and podcasts: slow, dark beds that leave space for the voice. See documentary music.

Edit points that make or break a scene

• Place the reveal on the peak. Find where the build is strongest and cut your key shot on that hit — or cut to silence one beat before it. A sudden silence is one of the strongest suspense effects there is.
• Keep narration clear. Sit the music roughly 12–18 dB below dialogue and choose sections without a lead melody under important lines.
• Loop sustained sections. Tracks built on a pedal note or ostinato extend cleanly for longer scenes; cut on the bar line.
• Stack two moods. Start a sequence with a mysterious bed and cross-fade into a more intense cue in the same key as the stakes rise.
